Can we just have a good time? Ive recently had thoughts on dating and wondering when we became so focused on where something is going that we stopped allowing ourselves to simply experience it. Maybe it's age. The older you get, the more dating seems to come with this unspoken urgency. We're supposed to know what we want. Be intentional. Ask the right questions. Avoid wasting time. Figure out whether someone fits into our future before we've really had the chance to know them in the present.
I do understand at this age, most of us have enough experience to know that we don't want to spend years in situations that clearly aren't going anywhere. But I also wonder if we've taken that too far. Because I can be intentional about life without needing every romantic experience to immediately become a relationship.
Sometimes (a lot of the times actually) I just want to enjoy getting to know someone. I enjoy conversation, attraction, romance, adventures, time, without immediately having to decide what box we're putting it in. That's when things become too serious for me, people get complacent and overall, stop dating because you are now "locked in". I think we've been conditioned to see romance as the beginning of something other than something worth experiencing on its own.
Dating can simply mean two adults are being honest about what they want and allowing a connection to exist without forcing it into a predetermined destination. When two people genuinely understand where they stand, I don't think every connection needs to come with a 5 year plan. Some friendships grow into something deeper. Some don't. Neither necessarily automatically makes the experience meaningless.
The expectations change. The questions change and suddenly something that felt light and natural can start carrying the weight of what it's supposed to become. It doesn't mean I never want another relationship. Maybe it just means I'm no longer in a rush to get to the serious part.
Yes, I'm getting older (not like that has anything to do with it). But maybe that's exactly why I want to slow down. I don't want to rush to the "good" parts anymore.
If love comes, beautiful.
If a relationship grows from it, beautiful.
But until then?
Can we just have a good time?

To me, I guess the question I need to ask myself is, what level of dating am I looking for? Am I simply looking to have a good time, enjoy someone’s company, and see where things go, or am I looking for a serious relationship with the potential for a lasting commitment? I think being honest with myself about what I truly want is important because it will help me make better decisions and avoid investing my time and emotions in something that doesn’t align with my expectations.
Thank you for your comment! I really appreciate it!! To me, being honest with myself is realizing that not everything warrants the deep stuff before actually getting to know someone. It is okay to spend time with someone before making those long term commitments.
