There is at least one day that belongs to JUST ME. There are no obligations and more importantly, there are no expectations. I call it my Self Care Day.
Now, I know it sounds cliche and you're probably picturing face masks and bubble baths, but self-care day is actually a little deeper than that. A self-care day can look like lying in bed all day, reading a book, doing a craft, taking myself on a date, or trying something new. Sometimes those days can also look like ignoring my phone, cleaning, watching a podcast or eating something good. All are valid but I want this to be known. My self-care day essentially is a day where I give myself permission to exist without constantly being needed.
As women, we're expected to be available allllll the timmeeeee.
Available for our families.
Available for our friends.
Available for work.
Available to answer calls and texts.
Available to solve problems.
At some point, I had something going on EVERY SINGLE DAY. Our weekends are already not long enough. I had nothing for me left, I was tired and irritated because I did not even have a day to myself to just exist.
That's when I created myself care day.
It's a standing appointment with myself at least one day every single week and it's a hard boundary I enforced with family and friends. I don't make plans unless it's something I WANT TO DO and I will say no without guilt. For the day, I become my own priority.
My family and friends know what myself care day means. Unless it's an emergency, it is very respected. I'm allowing myself time to regroup, catch up, do nothing if I want, worry about me and just exist without anyone else having expectations for me.
Rest doesn't have to be "earned". Sometimes people believe that you have to finish everything on your list before you are able to "relax". Sometimes you just need a day to do absolutely, NOTHING. Your peace of mind cannot always come after everyone else's comfort. At times, it just has to come first.
The great thing about Self Care Day, it can look however you want. Maybe you do a day trip somewhere, go to a museum, do nothing at home and actually rest, start a hobby, or bed rot (as this generation would say). The goal isn't to have the perfect curated day. The goal is to spend intentional time reconnecting with yourself without anyone else's expectations dictating how your day should be.
If you needed someone to tell you it's okay to take time for yourself...
Here is your permission slip.
Block the day or set a time (a few hours for those of you with families).
Tell your family and friends and protect that time or day like you would any important appointment. Spend that time releasing any expectations anyone may have of you. And spend intentional time with the one person you'll spend your entire life with....
YOU.
